[From obituary attached to back of image:] Died in Medford, Friday, March 9. Descendant of Mayflower stock: Miles Standish, John and Priscilla Alden and Alexander Samson. Parents were Benjamin F. and Harriet Northey Samson. Born in Medford December 7, 1840. Enlisted at Medford, Company C, 39th Massachusetts on August 25, 1862. Transferred to 10th U.S. Colored Troops and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on October 26, 1863. Promoted 1st Lieutenant April 27, 1864 and Captain October 19, 1864. Mustered out at Galveston, Texas, May 17, 1866. Longest serving and last to return of Medford's quota. Wife Clarissa Washburn Egery died 1911. Survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, bother and sister.
