[On back:] Captain, Company F, 5th Massachusetts Regiment. Died March 12, 1902. Mustered into U. S. service September 28, 1862. Again mustered July 28, 1864. Post Quartermaster three months, Fort Marshall, Baltimore. On July 14, 1863, occurred the draft riot in Boston. In five hours, raised a company of 100 men and was the first to report for duty outside of Boston. Received thanks of governor in special order #401 (1901). In 1861, disbursed $1,000 to the families of three months men. Nearly the entire quota of Medford were recommitted by Daniel W. Lawrence and myself.
