Captioned "View from First Rebel Fort West of Peach Tree Street, Looking E.S.E." Atlanta, October 1864. This artillery battery position was not labeled as a fort on military maps. It was between Confederate Forts Z and K and protected the northern approaches to Atlanta. The view is south-southeast looking toward Confederate Fort I, which is visible on the high ground where the line of rifle pits behind chevaux-de-frise intersects with the horizon. Fort I was part of Atlanta's inner fortification line. In the foreground are stacked Springfield rifles with bayonets and a hanging canteen to the left, and a Springfield rifle and hanging haversack to the right.
