Captioned "Allatoona from the Etawah", 1866. Photograph was taken near Cartersville, Georgia from an abandoned Union artillery battery emplacement overlooking the Etowah River. Site of the Battle of Allatoona is beyond the ridge at the right horizon. The Western & Atlantic railroad bridge at the right was targeted by Union raiders led by James J. Andrews ("Great Locomotive Chase") in April 12, 1862 but was not damaged. The bridge was burned by Confederates in May 1864 and again in October 1864 but was rebuilt each time by Union engineers. It was burned by Union forces in November 1864 and rebuilt by the railroad in 1866 as seen in the photograph.
