Captioned "Stone wall at the foot of Marye's Heights, which was gallantly carried by the 6th Maine Infantry." Confederate dead, Marye's Heights, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Dead soldiers lying in trench behind stone wall. Etched "Capt. Russell Phot" below rifle in foreground. This photo was taken on May 3, 1863 just before MHS.1948.1.3669. Shadows indicate it was taken about three hours after the storming of the wall. Scattered rifle muskets are a mix of Enfields and Springfields.
