<mods:note>The gondola and the figures of men and girls have been erased; an old man, wearing a cap and bending toward the left, is on the steps. In the recess of the doorway, which has been much darkened, are two indistinct figures; a gondola with a gondolier is at the right, and a number of figures are on the bridge. The white space on the window between the doorways is shaded, save for a narrow strip at lower right. The butterfly is at the left of the arch of the doorway, and there is more work all over the plate (J. S. Dutcher).</mods:note>

<mods:abstract>At the left, following the bend of a canal, is a massive building with two large doorways. Within the nearer doorway, which has a pointed arch and stands open, hangs a lantern. The farther doorway, with round arch enclosing an iron grille at the top, is boarded up and protected by an iron railing. At the right, across the canal, a row of tall buildings extends beyond a bridge with elliptic arch and iron railing, near which are three gondolas. There are figures in the open doorway.</mods:abstract>
