Adelaide Hood (1905 - 1983) was born in California in 1905 and raised in Massachusetts. She graduated from Mt. Holyoke in 1927 and lived in Boston for two years before moving to Greenfield in 1929 to work as the first full-time local agent for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Paul Jenkins recorded this interview with Adelaide Hood while conducting research for his book, The Conservative Rebel: A Social History of Greenfield, Massachusetts, published by the town of Greenfield in 1982. In this interview, Hood discusses her work in social services for the town of Greenfield, including the development of pediatric health clinics, community gardens that were started during the Great Depression, and determining Welfare stipends. She also discusses controversies around abortion and birth control access in hospitals in Franklin County, among other issues. The cassette tape on which this interview was recorded is very degraded and the recording has a great deal of background noise, as well as many skips. It is possible that portions of the interview were cut off.
