The theatre depicted is the first Federal Street Theatre, designed by Charles Bulfinch and opened in 1793. This building was destroyed by fire in 1798 and replaced by another building, also designed by Bulfinch. The second building survived as a theatre until it was demolished in 1852. From Winsor, “This cut is based on a water-color painting, 14 by 7 3/4 inches, representing the theatre on fire, with groups of allegorical figures in the foreground." The watercolor is now at the Bostonian Society.
