Letter from Edward M. Davis, Phila[delphia, Pennsylvania], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1838 [April] 21st
Description:
Edward Morris Davis writes to William Lloyd Garrison inviting him to attend a convention called by the Eastern Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. Davis says it is "particularly important that the Cause in our State should be kept on the advance" as Pennsylvania is a "frontier state and slaverys influence has clouded the minds" of the people. One example of this is the growth of colonizationist sentiments in the state, as Davis tells Garrison, "the Altar of Colonization has been erected here, and its deluded worshippers are many." He also comments on the new Pennsylvania Constitution of 1838 as having "the purpose of depriving them [free African-Americans] of the right of citizenship, and thereby making their houses so uncomfortable as to make them leave" for Africa. In the postscript, Davis thanks Garrison for his letter dated January 7 and advises him to "court not persecution, or fear it: coming undeserved it will bless you."
