Letter from John Rand, Milton, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1850 Feb[ruary] 16th
Description:
John Rand writes to Samuel May describing the visit of Lucy Stone to Milford and a lecture she delivered in the town. Rand reports that Stone "found with us a cordial welcome" and was introduced to the meeting by S.S. Kimball, "pastor of the Christian Church." He describes Stone's speech, including her beginning "by giving a thrilling account of some of the cruel wrongs inflicted up[o]n the unhappy slave ..." Rand also recounts Stone's description "of Thomas Garrett of Wilmington, Delaware, who had been legally robbed by the government officers in fines and costs of 6 or $7000 ..." for assisting fugitive slaves. He also summarizes Stone's argument that the Church was "doing more to uphold it [slavery] then any other class of the community" by continuing to invite slaveholders "into their pulpits and to their communion tables ..." Rand praises Stone's lecture and says, "I have heard many express the warmest approbation of the address, and but one that found any fault and he was not worth minding."
