Description:
Beriah Green writes to William Lloyd Garrison challenging claims made by the editor of the Recorder newspaper and asserting that "it is an act of high-handed tyranny for any master to impose upon them [their slaves] the necessity of going to Liberia or continuing in servitude." Green emphasizes the "point of principle" arguing that "every act, by which the master controls the movements of his slaves, is an act of tyranny." He also questions, "What shall a man do with laws, which require him to commit iniquity?" stating that laws "which require men to live in sin, are to be broken", in response to slaveholders and their apologists who use state laws as a justification for holding slaves or sending them to Africa. Green continues, "What are the laws so loudly complained of by the apologists for slavery?" and answers that these laws "owe their efficacy chiefly to the importance with which apologists for slavery invest in them."

On verso, the letter is addressed to "William Lloyd Garrison, Esq. Editor of the Liberator, Boston, Mass." and is postmarked with a blue oval stamp reading "Hudson, Ohio. Mar. 8."
This letter is printed in the Liberator of March 23, 1833 under the heading "Western Reserve College, March, 1833."
On verso, another letter from Green to Garrison is dated, "Hudson, [Ohio], March 7, 1833", in which Green asks Garrison to include the previous letter in the Liberator where "it may do something to awaken public attention to bottom principles". Green shares his outrage over the views of Mr. [Joseph] Tracy, former editor of the Vermont Chronicle, claiming he is "grieved and indignant at his paragraphs." Green then mentions some news from Western Reserve College and discusses mutual friends.
