Letter from Johnn Bishop Estlin, Bristol, [England], to Richard Davis Webb, 1845 November 5
Description:
John Bishop Estlin writes to Richard D. Webb regarding a long interview with a member of the Society of Friends who "I found rather prejudiced against the Am[erican] Abolitionists Soc[ietie]s from their violence." He persuaded her that these societies were "labouring causes...and that our sympathy and encouragement were due to the cause in which they were engaged." He writes that the interviewer thanked him for erasing the "objectionable part" in Douglass's narrative, which she could not have otherwise "put into the hands of her young people." He writes of the Friends in Dublin had been scandalized by the violent denunciantion uttered by F. Douglass in their meeting house.
