Letter from Mary Anne Estlin, Bristol, [England], to James Miller M'Kim, 1853 July 26
Description:
Mary Anne Estlin writes to James Miller McKim wishing him safe travels to America and news of her father's recovery. She writes, "He is as placid & contented as ever, & enjoys reading, but suffers after it from giddiness so much that he fears indulging long at a time, he has not strength enough to pursue his microscopic observations, & for the last few days his hand has become weaker at least & it is more effort to use it." She discusses how she will be able to "bring him fresh thoughts of an..infatiguing kind from the outer world. However he still maintains that he would rather dispense with these than have them forced upon him by any sharer of my 'companion' office, so I am content knowing we can only 'give what we have.' But I will not write an egotistical effusion when your thoughts are in Philadelphia, & my hands are wanted in another direction."
