Letter from Alfred Webb, Dublin, [Ireland], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1878 Nov[ember] 26th
Description:
Alfred Webb, son of Richard Davis Webb, writes to William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for "the handsome present you send me - the portrait of George Thompson." Webb discusses the important role of Thompson played in the antislavery movement and he comments that he "feel[s] deeply the gradual passing away of the old guard." He shares his pleasure at seeing Garrison's handwriting, remarking how it reminds him of his childhood, "when we were young & Father & Mother were alive & your picture occupied the centerplace over the fireplace [a]round which we used to sit". In the postscript, Webb asks Garrison to tell his son "Frank, that the Printers Strike has utterly broken down." Webb says he "feel[s] deeply for the men in the mistake they made."
