Letter from Mrs. Mary Welsh, Glasgow, [Scotland], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1852 Nov[ember] 22d
Description:
Mary Welsh writes to William Lloyd Garrison apologizing for not writing sooner to thank Garrison for his "valuable gift, 'Selections' from your writing." Welsh says she "read the book with an extraordinary degree of pleasure and profit" and wishes she "could put it into the hands of all I know, Friends & Foes". She then comments on the attitude of the British people and clergy and towards abolitionists, saying they "have taken their opinions from the pro slavery ministers of America". Welsh also discusses a meeting held in Glasgow "on account of the penny offering to Mrs. Stowe for the writing of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'", sharing her "delight with the book" and "the attention shown" to Stowe. She continually praises Garrison's efforts and says credits him with "preparing the minds of people both in America & this country" for reading Uncle Tom's Cabin.
