Description:
James Morris Whiton writes to Amos A. Phelps concerning an attempt made to renovate the Massachusetts Bible Society. He writes, "this society with D. Larkman for corresponding secretary has gone on diminshing until it does little more than manage the land given them by Gov Phiilips which is principally lent to the American society. They draw the interest annually in Bible, & circulate them their annual income has got down to about $300." He discusses the results of the antislavery society meetings. He writes, "The Hall was very well filled, with an audience of all sorts of persons--many were respectable persons among them probably drawn there to hear S.S. [Stephen Symonds] Foster...and also to hear the...singer who were engaged to be present. The speeches were dull and little interest was manifested by the Assembly in any thing except the singing." He discusses the other meetings that occurred that day and other decisions made that day. He also discusses questions regarding the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society maintaining the abolitionist newspaper, The Emancipator.
