Charles Sumner writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking him, "Please do not cut me off from the Liberator." He remarks that "our last battle approaches", seeking "Equality before the law - without distinct of color." Sumner says that, "Then at last will come reconciliation."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. Above the salutation the number "59" is written in pencil. On verso, along the head edge, "Hon. Charles Sumner Washington 3 April 1865 D.C." is written in black ink and in a different handwriting.
