Letter from Harriet Beecher Stowe, [Andover, Massachusetts], to William Lloyd Garrison, [1854 November 23]
Description:
Harriet Beecher Stowe writes to William Lloyd Garrison sending him "proof engravings from Richmond's picture" of her. Stowe encourages Garrison to sell them but says if he does not then her "friend Kennard of Bigelow Brothers & Kennard would sell them for Freeman's benefit." Stowe insists she would rather give the pictures to be sold than "to appear to be selling them myself." She also tells Garrison that her and her husband "are going tomorrow to see [John Greenleaf] Whittier" and they both "want some time to have a full talk with you on the apsects of the Free Labor movement as providentially developing".

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with an embossed portrait of a woman in the head- spine corner of the first and third pages. Above the portrait, a checkmark is drawn in pencil next to the words "Mrs. Stowe to W.L. Garrison.", which is written and underlined in black ink and a different handwriting. In the head- fore corner of the first page, "Andover, Mass." and "Nov. 23, 1854" are both written in pencil, with the date "Nov. 23, 1854." written in black ink between the two penciled phrases. On the adjacent page, there is an attached envelope addressed to "Wm. Lloyd Garrison Esq. Office of the Liberator Boston Mass" and is postmarked with a blue circular stamp reading "[Ando]ver Mass. [No]v. 30". On the top flap and the verso of the envelope, there are multiple scenes of slaves being sold, beaten, and escaping under two banners reading, "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you do you so unto them" and "Ye who take freedom from men how will you answer it to God". Below the envelope, in the tail- spine corner of the page, "Ms A.1.2 v.24 p165" is also written in pencil.
