Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison sending him thirty dollars (not included) to "contribute to the relief of the family of that true friend of America Washington Wilks". Smith also asks about the health of Garrison's wife, Helen Eliza Garrison, and discusses the course of the Civil War, remarking, "I have some apprehensions for the safety of Sherman's Army." He shares his belief in the success of Sherman and his army and says "its success will make the success of our cause certain." Before closing the letter, Smith also mentions that Garrison must have received his $200 deposit as he read a notice about it in the last issue of the Liberator.
