<mods:abstract>Charles Sumner writes to William Lloyd Garrison giving advice for George Thompson to emphasize some points in his rallying Union support in England. These points, numbered by Sumner, include "slave breeding in V[irgini]a which may be portrayed to as to excite disgust" and "the story of Mr. [Frederick] Douglass' imprisoned for teaching slaves to read the Bible. Let it all be told." He then narrates his own caning on the Senate floor, and says Senator James M. "Mason wrote a letter publicly approving the act ... & thus this Rebellion is the continuance of the act." He tells Garrison he "wrote this for your public eye" but hopes Garrison will pass these points to Thompson "in your own way."</mods:abstract>
