Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison saying he has read with "satisfaction your 'Drafting - the hour of Trial" (an article in the Liberator) and calls it "a beautiful specimen". Smith discusses Garrison's comparison of "Non-Resistants" and Quakers when faced with a military draft and tells Garrison he "look[s] with interest for your continuation next week."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with an embossed logo in the head- spine corner of the first and third pages, showing an oval containing the words, "Holyoke & Co.". Above the salutation, the number "111" is written in pencil and there are three vertical lines, drawn in ink, over the last paragraph of the letter.
