Fanny Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison telling him she is "now upon the brink of the grave." She informs Garrison that she wants to help African-Americans but does "not know what course to take" and asks him for information about "the school for the colored race - also your advice as to the best use I can make of my little fund."
