Letter from William Smeal to William Lloyd Garrison, [1841]
Description:
William Smeal writes to William Lloyd Garrison in this portion of a letter about charges made against Joseph Sturge. Smeal states his purpose "is the information of the Anti Slavery friends, so far as our Society extends - believing, that if not issued from [G]lasgow, there was no other locality in the Kingdom, from which such Documents, as the Boston Female Report, wo[ul]d be likely to be brought into notice." Smeal signs the letter "William Smeal. One of the Sec[retaries] Glas[gow] Eman[cipation] Society". In the postscript, Smeal states he is "daily expecting to see John A. Collins here accompanied by C[harles]. L[enox]. Remond."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in brown ink on white paper. On the first page, in the head- spine corner there is a small checkmark drawn in pencil, next to the number "205," also in pencil. Along the head edge, above the first line of the letter, "[1841]" has been recorded in black ink. This is only a partial letter and begins mid-sentence on the final page of a letter. On the verso, the letter is addressed to "Wm. Lloyd Garrison Boston US" with the note "Kindly foward by Dr. McLear". Along the spine edge of the second page, there is a red circular seal, mostly covered with paper.
