<mods:abstract>Paschal Beverly Randolph writes to William Lloyd Garrison informing him that a new Freedmen's school in New Orleans has been named in his honor. Randolph identifies himself as the principal of the school and states "We have been open two weeks, and numbered 373 pupils last night." He also describes some of the tools the students could use and "beg[s] a little assistance from Boston" to help acquire them.</mods:abstract>

<mods:note>Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in blue ink on white paper. There is an embossed logo in the head- edge corner featuring a building with the word "Congress" written above it, all enclosed in an oval. Over the logo, the number "144" has been written in pencil. There are also numerous annotations, like double and triple underlines, under letters in the sender's address and salutation. On the back of the leaf, there are 5 black spots on the spine edge and 3 black spots on the fore edge. On the tail edge of this page, the phrase "Ms.A.1.2 v.34 p.88" is written in pencil.</mods:note>
