Edmund Q. Putnam writes to William Lloyd Garrison in appreciation of the Garrison's recent letter "on the state of the South." Putnam refers to the letter as "the shrill call of the bugle, arousing the sleeping camp" and, as the author, Garrison is "entitled to the thanks and gratitude of every colored person, North and South."
