In the foreground, slanting from left to right, is an open roadway along the side of a canal, on which several barges and other boats are plying. Down the canal is a row of houses, partly veiled by trees, and interrupted by a massive octagonal tower with cupola and belfry; on the sides of the tower are inscribed the points of the compass.
