St. Peter's and the intervening buildings of Rome are seen from the terrace on the edge of the Pincio. Two carabinieri stand by the stone wall, turning their backs to the spectator. The carabinieri inserted in outline; the first (to left) has his left arm stretched out towards the left. Instead of a solid stone wall there is an open railing formed of intersecting arcs and upright posts with a solid pedestal near right end.
