Text from Brockton and South Shore District Master Craftsmen Series: Welting is a process that requires a good eye, a steady hand, physical stamina and an absence of "nerves." The vibration of this heavy machine as it rapidly forces the needle through several thicknesses of leather and cloth necessitates powerful arm and chest development to hold the shoe in place. Knute Abrahamson. . . has welted shoes for the Brockton Co-operative Boot & Shoe Co. for fifteen years. He learned his trade in Stockholm, Sweden, twenty-eight years ago.
