1. fol. 1: recycled document recording expenditures, some mentioning a "sinod," with entries dated 1271-1277. It is possible that this refers to the Synod that Archbishop Robert de Insula, Bishop of Durham, called in 1276-7 (see W. Fordyce, The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham, v. I (London, 1857), p. 46)
2. fol. 1v: blank.
3. fol. 2: 15th-century additions, including an indulgence and a prayer for pregnant women.
4. fol. 2v: 15th-century additions, Office and Mass against the Plague, attributed to Pope Clement VI.
5. fol. 3-8v: calendar, approximately half filled, including several fifteenth-century birth and death notices of members of the extended Gascoigne and de Neville families of Yorkshire (see Provenance below).
6. fol. 9-142: Temporale.
7. fol. 142-180v: Sanctorale.
8. fol. 181-225: Commons and prayers/blessings for special occasions, burials, etc.
9. fol. 225-228v: 15th-century additions, including an blessing of the waters.

Ms. codex.
Bibliographic record created by BPL staff based on description by Dr. Lisa Fagin Davis.
Origin: Written in Yorkshire in the mid-fourteenth century, for the use of York. The calendar includes typical Yorkshire saints such as John, Archbishop of York (7 May and Translation, 25 October), Everildis (9 July), William, Archbishop of York (8 August), Wilfridus (12 October and Translation, 24 April), and the Feast of the Relics (9 October, a feastday devoted to the relics of York Minster). The calendar also includes Thomas, Bishop of Herford (2 October), who was canonized in 1320, shortly before the manuscript was written. Throughout the calendar and missal, all references to and liturgy commemorating Thomas Becket were crossed out or scraped away during the Reformation (see, e.g., fol. 160 and 189v).
- Notes (ownership):
-
Provenance: Owned from the fifteenth century by the Gascoigne and de Neville families of Yorkshire, with birth and death notices added to the calendar: William Gascoigne (d. 8 March 1486--his mother was Joan de Neville), his wife Margaret (d. 6 Feb.), his daughters Margaret (b. 29 November ca. 1480?) and Elizabeth (b. 26 July 1476), his sons Thomas (b. 28 Feb. 1477) and Henry (b. 1 July 1482), his sister-in-law Eleanor Delaware (d. 6 Feb.), one Alice Neville (d. 8 May 1481, presumably the Alice Neville who died that year at age 91 and who was William's great-great-grandfather's neice), and others. Around the year 1560, the Gascoigne and Wentworth families were joined by the marriage of Margaret Gascoigne and Thomas Wentworth, the manuscript doubtless coming with Margaret into her new home and remaining with the Wentworth, later Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, families until it was sold in 1953. Bookplate of William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, 7th Earl Fitzwilliam (1872-1943), inside front cover. The Earl was a descendant of the Gascoigne and de Neville families, and the family arms on the front and back covers combine the blazons of the Gascoigne (an eel's-head between two bands) and de Neville families with Wentworth (the three lions, seen on the cover and on the bookplate). Several old shelfmarks inside front cover: C.3.6 and W.IV.7.

Lacking one leaf before fol. 9 (the first leaf of the temporale) and its conjoint after fol. 14 (i.e. the outermost bifolium of quire I), one leaf after fol. 17 (probably the initial for the Slaughter of the Innocents), one leaf after fol. 92, all of quire XIV (between fol. 108 and 109; Pentecost - Dom. II post Pent., presumably eight leaves), two leaves cancelled after fol. 180 (the end of the sanctorale) ; signatures in red roman numerals, lower right corner first recto of each quire beginning with "I" on folio 9 (technically the beginning of the second quire, since the calendar is unsigned), those numerals used here for reference. Catchwords in lower right corner, final verso of each quire. Modern arabic pencil foliation, upper outer corner of each page, beginning with "1" on the first flyleaf, used here for reference.
Layout: Two columns, 34 lines. Bounding and ruling lines in light plummet.

Decoration: Four- to six-line "puzzle" initials in colors (pale pink, blue and green) on gold leaf with bars extending the entire height of the margin with leafy extensions, gold balls and grotesques into upper and lower margins, on fol. 15v (Christmas), fol. 19 (Epiphany), fol. 93 (Easter), fol. 105v (Ascension), fol. 142 (St. Andrew, to begin the Sanctorale), fol. 147v (Purification), fol. 165v (Assumption), fol. 176v (All Saints); two-line blue with red filigree or red with purple throughout.
Binding: Rebound in tawed calfskin in 2019. Formerly bound in 18th-century calf over pasteboard, gilt arms on both covers incorporating the Wentworth, de Neville, and Gascoigne arms, gilt fillet border. Spint gilt-stamped with florets in compartments, title "Breviarium" on red label on spine, front cover detached, rear cover nearly so, parchment pastedown with conjoint free flyleaves in front, paper pastedown with conjoint free flyleaf in back.
