Notes:
The Normal School building, erected in 1846, was the first state-funded building in the U.S. constructed specifically for the training of teachers. The first enlargement of the building, in the summer of 1861, included the addition of two wings. A third story was added in the summer of 1871. A note on the back of the photograph indicates the date it was taken, July 1, 1871, and is signed by the school's principal, Albert G. Boyden. The original Normal School Building was removed in 1890 and replaced by a much larger brick Normal School building.
