Eliza Woodward was born in Haverhill, New Hampshire in 1827. She entered the State Normal School at Bridgewater in March 1856, studying under Marshall Conant, Bridgewater’s second principal. Apparently she was such as outstanding student that Conant offered her the opportunity to return to the school as a teacher. Woodward accepted, and in September of 1857 she began teaching reading, which she taught until 1875 when she became an instructor of drawing and she carried out these duties until her retirement in July 1887. Woodward died four months later at the home of her sister in Pennsylvania. Her body was returned to Bridgewater and Woodward was buried next to the grave of her mentor and friend, Marshall Conant.
