Schmid graduated from the college in 1943 with a major in health and physical education and a minor in general science. He was a member of the Springfield College men's soccer team for 4 years and was team Captain during his senior year, the 1942 season. He was also a member of the men's gymnastic team for 4 years and was team Captain during his senior year. He participated in track 1 year and lacrosse 1 year, as well. After graduating, Schmid had a 36 season long coaching career at Springfield. He finished his career with a record of 271 wins, 162 losses, and 50 ties, a winning percentage of .613.
