The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) presented this document to those who served in the United States Army during World War II. Edwin W. Greene joined the United States Naval Reserve on March 18, 1942 and ultimately earned the rank of lieutenant. In the center of the certificate is a picture of him in uniform.

Greene was born in Suffern, New York on October 21, 1912 to Eliza and Samuel Greene. He graduated from the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College, in 1935. While at Springfield, he played freshman varsity football, basketball, and baseball, and was on the varsity football and basketball teams for three years. He was a member of the interclass swim team, track team, and religious committee. Greene also tutored at freshman camp and coached freshman varsity baseball during his senior year.
