Letter from Joel and Barbara Halpern to his parents during their time in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. This letter is in the form of an interview conducted by Halpern's translator, Aram Udol. Udol interviewed a "Meo" (Hmong) from a village called Kio Ya, or Grassy Ridge, forty kilometers south of Luang Prabang. Until recently, this man had been a Nai Ban, or village chief. He discusses the economic conditions of his village: the crops they grow, goods bought and sold, and his wife, who weaves and makes clothing.
