Letter from Joel and Barbara Halpern to his parents during their time in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. This letter is in the form of field notes describing the celebrations surrounding the end of Buddhist Lent. A lantern with interior revolving silhouettes is described. The differences in attitudes toward jokes between Thailand and Laos is discussed. The customs and attitudes toward bonzes are also discussed, particularly with regard to money. He ends with a description of watching model pirogues (boats) on the Nam Khan river.
