Louisa tells Sarah about the work that is being done to the house, mainly the building of a new front porch. She debates what color she should paint the porch and porch ceiling, weighing the pros and cons of each. Louisa thinks she will have the porch painted white and the ceiling a sky blue. She notes that it is memorial day and admits she did not go to church because she did not like the preacher. Louisa goes on to talk about town gossip and other housework she has been doing.
