Manuel da luz Goncalves grew up in Fogo, Cape Verde, received his education in the seminary in Cape Verde and Portugal, followed his parents to Roxbury in 1974 and arrived in USA prior to the end of colonial rule in Cape Verde. He bought a house for his family in Roxbury through the church and continued his graduate studies in Boston. He worked for the Boston Public Schools during and following court-ordered desegregation, worked with others to have the official language of Cape Verde – Cape Verdean Creole – be part of the bilingual education classroom instruction and became a guidance counselor. A project of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and supported by a Mass Humanities project grant, Neighborhood Voices is an oral history project documenting the stories of families living in the Dudley Street neighborhood.
