Adalberto Teixeira grew up in Fogo, Cape Verde and after serving in the Portuguese military arrived in Roxbury in 1976. He lived through the fires, redlining, violence, abandoned cars and illegal dumping on vacant lots.. By the mid-80s he was active in the tight-knit Cape Verdean community and worked for DSNI initially as an interpreter and then an organizer before working for the city on constituent services. A project of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and supported by a Mass Humanities project grant, Neighborhood Voices is an oral history project documenting the stories of families living in the Dudley Street neighborhood.
