Julia Centeio was born in Cape Verde in 1959, one of fourteen children, and joined some of her extended family in Roxbury in 1971. Arriving prior to bilingual education, she experienced a variety of education settings, finished her degrees and spent most of her career as a teacher at a neighborhood school. She raised her children and a sibling in the house her father had bought in Roxbury in the early 70’s. A project of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and supported by a Mass Humanities project grant, Neighborhood Voices is an oral history project documenting the stories of families living in the Dudley Street neighborhood.
