Antiquarian ladies on the Hedge House porch (1920)
Description:
'In October 1919, a group of visionary local women formed the Plymouth Antiquarian Society to save the 1809 Hedge House from demolition. They convinced the Town Selectmen to sell the house to them for one dollar and raised the funds to move it from its original location on Court Street (where Memorial Hall stands today) to its current location on Water Street. Even before the move, the Antiquarian ladies opened the house as a museum. They welcomed visitors during the Pilgrim Tercentenary year of 1920. One of the original members was my great-grandmother, Bertha (Briggs) Chapman. It is an honor to be continuing the work of these remarkable women as Executive Director of the Society today. Location: Court Street.'
