'Driveway to Chilton Hall. This was my great-grandfather's (Sherman L. Whipple, prominent Boston attorney) summer home which he bought in 1910 from Eben Jordan. It was known as Chilton Hall (twenty-three bedrooms and thirteen baths). The estate had an ice house, greenhouse, pheasant farm, several ponds, trout hatchery, indoor riding ring and stable to 121 horses in addition to a dairy farm that prospered until the early 1960s. The house is gone but the large granite retaining walls remain. Today my house and property lie on the right side of the photo. Shinglebrook runs beneath the bridge which eventually empties into Eel River. There is a lovely waterfall that flows into the stream that our granddaughters greatly enjoy swimming in. The stream is the boundary of one side of our property. Pictured: Unidentified man and dog, probable farmhand and sheep dog (there were flocks of sheep to help keep the expansive lawns trim). Location: Chiltonville.'
