Thornsen taught Physical Education at Springfield College from 1951 to 1974, joining the staff the same year that women were admitted to the College. In 1968, she was appointed the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She wrote "Basic Rhythms" with Ruth Evans and worked as the editor for all sports definitions for Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (located in Springfield, MA).
