Work Week is a precursor to the present day Humanics-in-Action Day that takes place every Fall at Springfield College, and reflects a long tradition of community service by Springfield College Students from the founding of the school in 1885. Work Week at Springfield College in 1969 was particularly ambitious and productive. As one of the kickoff events of a capital campaign led by Art Linkletter, famous TV personality, Springfield College students participating in Work Week hired themselves out to local businesses and individuals. Over 1000 students contributed more than 3000 hours of labor to the effort. They donated all of their pay for the jobs they completed, $34, 570.81, to the capital campaign. The funds raised helped build the new library, athletic fields, and science center. In the course of their labors, the students also consumed more than 600 gallons of gasoline, 600 gallons of coffee, and 1600 doughnuts (all donated by local businesses and Springfield College staff).
The photograph contains a typed descriptive label created by the Public Relations Office indicating that the photograph is from 1969. Why the item is in a folder labelled 1965 is not clear. The researcher feels that photograph may be from an earlier time because the men's haircuts suggest that it could be from 1965.
