The French government was moved to the Port of Bordeaux in 1914 when German troops advanced on Paris. At the government’s behest, Marie Curie also took a Bordeaux-bound train, as her lab possessed the county’s entire stock of radium for research. For American soldiers stationed in large cities such as Bordeaux, the YMCA rented houses and hotels to use as canteens. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Milton Herbert Bancroft (1867 - 1947) was an Impressionist painter of portraits, landscapes, figures, and murals. He attended the Massachusetts Normal Academy School in Boston when he was sixteen, and upon completion of his studies, he began teaching at Swarthmore College. From 1886 to 1893 he took intermittent courses at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts while also teaching there. In 1894, Bancroft married Margaret Moore and move with her to France. His work was influenced by his stay at Giverny, France, where he adopted the effects of sun dappled light on figures and landscape that were espoused by Richard Miller, Louis Ritman, Frederick Frieseke, and George Biddle. He later retired in Sandy Spring, Maryland, where he remained until his death.
The entire right edge is incomplete and the bottom-left corner has withstood damage. There are some darkened areas on the lower half of the poster.
