Amos - lecture 4
Sarna - Amos #4
- Description:
-
The lecture begins by examining Amos 3:9 and how the chapter starts with heraldic terminology. Sarna discusses the use of the word "Shim'u"' that begins chapter 3. As he works his way through Chapter 3, Amos 3:9 mentions the palaces or fortress of Ashdod, which is a large port city in Israel. This foreshadows the downfall of the Northern kingdom. Sarna further investigates the linguistics of this verse and the choice of Hebrew words. This leads Sarna to state that in the prophetic books there are common linguistic traits. He also shows the difference in the English translations of this verse, specifically the translation for "chamas" which has been translated as violence. Sarna notes that this really means "lawlessness". The lecture delves into the concept of human time and divine time. As the lecture progresses, Sarna points out that since Amos was a shepherd, there is a significant amount of metaphors in the text that relate to shepherding. Within verse 13, Sarna points out the use of the text "house of Jacob" and notes that Amos refers to the children of Israel by their patriarches such as Isaac, Abraham, etc. Sarna claims that prophet was talking in the temple in Bethel based on the evidence found in the text. The temple of Bethel was founded by Jacob and became the sacred place in the Northern kingdom. Similar to the previous lecture, Sarna raises the question of sin and uses the example of the golden calf from the Book of Exodus and the concept of idolatry. In the latter part of his lecture, Sarna makes the claim that in the Tanakh tension of the anthropomorphism and preserving the absolute, abstract nature of God is present. As Sarna discusses verse 14, he begins up the issues surrounding biblical archaeological evidence in relation to ancient alters, in particular the understanding of the 4 horns at each corner of the alter. The last part of the lecture consists of comments, questions, and answers as well as Sarna breaking down Amos 3:15.
