Keyes, the chairman of the Lectures to the Laity committee introduces the presiding chairman of the evening, Dr. Sam Zachary Levine, Professor of Pediatrics at Cornell Medical College and Pediatrician in Chief of New York Hospital. Dr. Levine introduces the talk by discussing the importance of growth and development of children in pediatric medicine. Dr. Sen spends the lecture discussing the history of the parenting strategies and education of children in America and the shift towards believing that each child is their own individual person. He also comments on the current failings of the New York City Department of Health and the history of organized protections against cruelty towards children, social agencies for children, and other societal reforms.
