4.25 x 7.25" black-and-white photograph, mounted on cardstock, of twelve schoolchildren at the Carroll School in West Newton, about age 9 to teenaged, with two teachers. Undated. From clothing it appears to be c. 1895. The Carroll School, a small private school, was founded c. 1884 by Kate Carroll (1846-1920) and her niece, Rosalie Carroll (1864-1938), at their home on Temple Street, West Newton. The school soon moved to a purpose-built school building at 147 Prince Street. In 1900 the school was inherited by Mary S. Barbour, who like the Carrolls was both headmistress and owner. The school operated until about 1961. In the 1960s it was purchased and became a new school, also named the Carroll School, to serve children with verbal learning differences. That school moved to Lincoln, MA, in 1971. A different school operated from the building at 147 Prince Street until the 1990s, when it was converted to a residence.
