Edward Hitchcock letter to the editors of the Independent, ca. 1861
Description:
A letter to the editors of the Independent, a New York newspaper, in which Edward Hitchcock criticizes the newspaper for implying that Hitchcock's views in an article entitled "The Cross in Nature and The Nature in the Cross" were influenced by Dr. Horace Bushnell. Hitchcock makes clear that he was lecturing about the topic in question prior to the publication of Bushnell's book in 1858. It is unclear whether this letter was actually sent to the editors or if it is merely a draft.
