Jan Kelly writes a weekly column for Provincetown Magazine. This article is an interview with Francis 'Flyer' Santos, builder of the half scale model of the Rose Dorothea, the schooner that won the Lipton Cup in 1907 and is on display at the Provincetown Public Library on the second floor. Born in 1914 in Provincetown, he was the second of seven children. Flyer went to Bristol, RI for 5 years to study boat building at the Hereschoff boatyard before acquiring his own boatyard in Provincetown. He married Irene Maille in 1938 and fathered 6 children. Flyer was one of the founders of the West End Racing Club, a nearly free sailing club for children that has been in existence since the 1950's.
