Joel M. Halpern stands on the shore of Lake Torneträsk. In front of him are bundles of his personal belongings. Behind him is a boat with Nils Gaup, a 40 year-old Sami man, standing nearby. In the background is the opposite shoreline, with mountains showing some snow. This photograph was taken by Lutheran Pastor Lennart Wallmark, principal of the Sami folk high school in Jokkmokk from 1942 to 1972. He invited Joel M. Halpern to accompany him on his tour into the Sami villages, and sent the set of prints to Halpern back in the U.S.
